War of the Worlds
"LightAct's support was incredibly responsive."
Steve Jackson
Video Systems Designer
In this bold retelling of H.G. Wells’ classic, British theatre company imitating the dog combines live performance with high-end digital “wizardry.” The production functions as a live movie-making process where four performers use cameras, miniature environments, and model worlds to construct an epic road movie in real-time.
The production requires a robust, low-latency media server capable of handling multiple live camera feeds, high-frame-rate pre-recorded content, and complex signal routing—all while maintaining the reliability needed for a heavy touring schedule across the UK and Europe.
Technical Architecture
Steve Jackson, Video Systems Designer on this show, used a custom-built media server ecosystem optimized for LightAct. To ensure “show-must-go-on” reliability, the system operates in a Primary and Backup configuration.
The show includes 4 camera feeds constantly dynamically switching and dozens of cues on a timeline, all controlled with incoming DMX.
Central to the “live cinema” aesthetic is the integration of four live cameras that capture the actors and miniature models.
These live feeds are processed within the media server, allowing the designers to mix live “location” shots with digital backgrounds and pre-recorded elements instantly.
