Kampong Bharu

"The real-time connection between Unreal Engine and LightAct was critical in making this project work."

Kampong Bharu is a traditional Malay enclave in the middle of Kuala Lumpur. It is also a place of a proposed new real-estate development, unveiled in September 2019. The presentation, attended by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad was done with an interactive projection on a 3D printed scale model of the development.

FUJR, Unreal Engine and LightAct specialists based in Penang, Malaysia, were responsible for the content and projection mapping. They used Unreal Engine’s UMG to create a user interface where the visitors could choose what part of the development they would like to have explained to them. This user interface was displayed on a tablet in front of the model.

"We could not have done this project in time without LightAct’s intuitive projection mapping and texture processing tools."

Once a user tapped on it, the information was sent to LightAct, which played the correct HAP file. There were more than 200 video files and in some instances, they had to be sequenced automatically by the software.

The real-time connection between UE4 and LightAct was critical in making this project work, said QJ Lee from FUJR, who was responsible for LightAct programming. “With all the support documentation and video tutorials that are available, it was quite straightforward to set it up”, he added.

FUJR used 1 Panasonic PT-VMZ50 projector aimed at a flat mirror above the model which reflected the light downwards onto the model itself. The video files had to be, in some cases, cropped & padded before pushed to the projector. “We could not have done this project in time without LightAct’s intuitive projection mapping and texture processing tools”, said Owson Ong from FUJR.

During the presentation to the local community, a camera was filming the model and streamed directly to a large projection screen.

"LightAct support team went absolutely out of their way to help us with this complex and high-stakes project. We are very happy with how they responded."

LightAct support team was standing by remotely during the days leading to the presentation and helped FUJR with suggestions and tips. “LightAct support team went absolutely out of their way to help us with this complex and high-stakes project. We are very happy with how they responded.”, is how Owson summarized the collaboration.
