Forklift Simulator

"LightAct is the only media server which integrates with Unreal Engine at the level we were looking for."

Julia Valeria Lopez

Technical Leader, INAOE

Laboratorio de Simuladores (LVC) at INAOE, Mexico created a sit-down forklift simulator for Schnellecke Logistics using LightAct and Unreal Engine 4. The simulator is used to train forklift operators to work in an Audi storage plant.

The system consists of a booth, electronic controls and a mechanical structure similar to a real forklift. The simulator immerses the user into the environment using a dome screen with a rear-projection system. There is also a workstation for the instructor, in which she can visualize the current operation with various graphical metrics to evaluate performance.

Julia Valeria Lopez, who was working on this project at LVC chose LightAct because it offers an easy and straightforward way to do projection mapping with content created by Unreal Engine. She had this to say about Lightact: “We chose LightAct as it is the only media server on the market which integrates with Unreal Engine at the level we were looking for.“

"LightAct was really easy to use, the integration with Unreal Engine is great and the projection mapping very intuitive."

Unreal Engine project uses 3 Scene Capture components radially positioned around the player. The 3 textures are streamed via Spout to LightAct, which, after warping and blending, pushes them to the projectors.

"We couldn’t be happier with the support we received from LightAct team. It’s a great company to work with!"

Mitja Prelovšek, director of LightAct, had a very particular reason why this project was very important for LightAct: “We were very excited about this project because it is one of the first done with our software licenses and with our involvement being limited to remote support only. When we saw the outcome, we were happy and humbled beyond belief.“
