Bring the Spring Competition awards the best immersive & interactive content created with LightAct, LightTrack and Notch!

The Coming of Spring

Bring the Spring is a competition organized by LightAct and supported by Notch inviting participants to create interactive Notch content that  represents The Coming of Spring’.

The Awards

Top 3 entries will:

  • receive a 6-month LightAct Pro license with LightTrack enabled,
  • have their content showcased on LightAct’s booth at ISE 2025 and seen by hundreds of our visitors,
  • featured on LightAct website and social media channels and
  • be eligible to join LightAct Frontrunner Initiative.

The winner will also receive a 6-month Notch license!

The Brief

Tracking area at ISE 2025 LightAct booth that the projects submitted should take in consideration

On LightAct’s ISE 2025 booth, we will create a 2.7 m by 2 m tracking area where people’s movement will be tracked using LightTrack system. On the wall in front of the tracking area, we will mount a 3D printed 1.5 m high bust of Kurent (see below for more info about Kurent).

The tracking data will be passed to your Notch block which will render the content for the tracking area and the bust of the Kurent on the wall.

The content will be projected onto the tracking area and the bust.

Who is Kurent?

Kurent is a traditional UNESCO protected carnival character from Slovenia that “scares away the winter and brings in the spring“. There is plenty of information about Kurent available online, but you can also click on the link below to give you a starting point.

What will you be provided with

We will provide you with everything you need to start working on your Notch block straight away. You will be given a LightAct sample project with LightTrack simulation and sample Notch blocks already set up.

You will also receive textured and untextured versions of the 3D model of Kurent, which you should use in your block.

The list of the provided materials is:

To receive these materials, please apply below.

Video tutorial

Please watch this video to get a better understanding of the booth, the brief and the content pipeline.

The Deliverables

In order to be eligible for the prizes, you need to send us the following materials:

You can use 2 separate Notch blocks, one for Kurent and one for tracking area, or you can use Notch’s Multi Camera to render everything with one block.

The provided sample projects use the approach with 2 separate Notch blocks, but if you need our guidance on how to set up the pipeline with Multi-Camera inside LightAct, let us know.

You can use a Learning license for creating your Notch block and we will take care of the conversion of the .DFXDLL files.

Requirements

Projection mapping

This project is a projection mapping project so your Notch block has to respect some fundamental guidelines.

For Kurent content you need to output the content using UV camera that has Kurent 3D object as its input. Content that is not rendered by the UV camera, won’t be visible on the projection.

You are free to change the texturing or UV mapping of Kurent, but you should not change the shape of the object in any way.

Interactivity

The content also needs to be interactive and react to the LightTrack tracking data coming in from LightAct media server. The tracking data consists of only locations of people in the tracking area (not rotations or scale). See sample Notch blocks to learn how you can process the data.

It is up to you to decide how the interaction will work and if it’s going to react to all the people or just one of them and so on.

However, the content needs to make sense whether there are no people, one or several in the tracking area.

Other

All of the content needs to be able to run in real-time on a single server with an NVidia RTX A5000. The resolution of the tracking area is around 1333 by 1786px and the resolution of Kurent around 1920 x 1080px. We might be changing this when we are on site, but these numbers should give you a rough guideline.

For more information, please watch the video tutorial above and explore the sample projects.

The Deadline

The deadline for submission is 22nd January 2025, 23:59 (CET). Please send us the deliverables using a file-sharing service.

or send an email to info@lightact.com directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Anyone can apply.

Send an email to us by clicking on the Apply button below.

In the email include your name, country where you are from and whether you are planning to come to the ISE this year.

After you send us the application email, you will get an auto-response with some additional information including the download links to all the materials. You will also receive an invite to our Discord server where we will be able to provide a limited support to all the participants of the competition.

If you change the shape of 3D model of Kurent, the projection won’t work.

You will hear back from us on the 24th of January 2025.

We will showcase the winning entries at our booth on ISE 2025 and upload them to our website and show it to thousands of our visitors.

Yes! If you are one of the winners, we would be very happy to meet you in person. We will probably also do a little ceremony đŸ™‚
