The Human

"LightAct and LightTrack were key to creating the feeling of a living space."

Phormatik studio, led by Mihail Iliev, has created The Human, a groundbreaking interactive immersive space that transforms a massive physical environment into a responsive, living canvas.

Located in Sofia, Bulgaria, this ambitious installation relies entirely on LightAct’s technology to create an incredible and completely immersive experience.

To achieve this vision of a dynamic, living system, the studio faced the critical challenge of building a “technically stable yet sensitive interaction system capable of capturing movement in real time without latency.”

The installation covers a vast 150-square-meter area and required a robust solution to track all the people in the space, process tracking data, render real-time visuals, and output final pixels through 10 high-resolution projectors.

"LightAct team was responsive, fast and extremely knowledgeable"

LightAct’s proprietary LightTrack markerless technology provided the essential solution. The system uses three LightTrack depth cameras to precisely track every individual within the space.

All people-tracking and spatial data processing are handled within the LightAct platform, which then passes low-latency tracking information to Notch, where the real-time interactive visuals are generated.

They are then pushed through 10 perfectly mapped and blended projectors onto projection surfaces.

For Mihail Iliev from Studio Phormatik, the advantage of this workflow was clarity:

LightAct and LightTrack were key to creating the feeling of a living space. The greatest advantage was that we could think as artists without compromising technical stability. The software allowed us to program reactions and adaptations that support the feeling of an intelligent space—one that literally breathes with the human.

"We could focus on the content and let LightAct take care of the technology."

By using LightAct as the reliable, low-latency platform, Studio Phormatik was able to focus on the artistic goal: creating a visual language that evolves dynamically without losing its internal logic, and achieving harmony in an environment that never repeats itself.

This successful collaboration was further supported by the LightAct team, whom Iliev praises as “responsive, fast, and extremely knowledgeable.

The result is an installation that has shown the potential for technology-based art in the region. Iliev concludes, “People walked in curious and often walked out emotionally moved, feeling that they had participated in something personal and unrepeatable.
